Building a fintech categorisation list

#1

I’m trying to put together a list of broad fintech areas and their sub-specialities. I’d love any input from the community on helping flesh this out. The way I’m structuring it at the moment is

Broad Area

  • Sub-speciality

I’m then imagining broad themes cut through all of these, like ‘Small business’ or ‘Developing World’ etc.

Here’s what I have so far! Please feel free to add to the list or dispute/recategorise…!

Lending

  • Invoice finance
  • Merchant cash advance
  • P2P lending
  • Marketplace lending (balance sheet mix/p2p)
  • Payroll lending
  • Checkout finance

Payments

  • Acquiring
  • Billing
  • Payment aggregators

Personal Finance

  • Payday lending
  • Wealth management
  • Superannuation (401K)
  • Consumer banking

Money Transfer

  • P2P
  • Remittance

Digital Currency

  • Bitcoin
  • Identity

Investing

  • Equity financing
  • Crowdfunding
  • Institutional investing

Technology

  • Blockchain
  • Banking APIs

Business Tools/Analytics?

  • Cloud Accounting
  • Financial research

Security

  • ?

I think it would be prudent to add a Data/Analytics category, with Alternative and Traditional Financial Data subcategories. Although maybe that would go under Business Tools/Analytics? You should also have an Investment Research category. Not sure if that’s different than or a replacement for Financial Research.

Hi @jordanhauer4 thanks for the ideas! Yes, data analytics should probably have its own category under Business Tools, agreed. Financial research is broad, so yes, was thinking derivatives of financial research, like investment research could come under this. There would be a lot of options here.

@Jessica @jordanhauer4

You have my support on this. Perhaps there is a way to segment verticals (lending, wealth, etc) and horizontals (data, research, tools, training/education, etc). Full transparency, I’m a partner in a data business so clearly biased in promoting it.
